Alane is one of the most promising solutions to storing hydrogen for use in hydrogen fuel cells. This technology provides exceptional improvement in solving the difficult problem of economically preparing the material.
Describes methods and materials required for the formation of alanes. Lowering the free energy of the reaction by making use of "catalyzed aluminum" and formation of stabilizing adducts of alane, it is possible to regenerate aluminum hydride from aluminum metal and molecular hydrogen. Continuation in part of U.S. patent 7,521,037.
Aluminum hydride is an attractive alternative to the traditional metal hydrides for the storage of hydrogen for its use as an energy source. Alanes use as the primary source of hydrogen has previously been hindered by a lack of energetically and fiscally sounds methods for its regeneration from Al metal and molecular hydrogen. This technology may solve the problems surrounding regeneration of aluminum hydride.
The aluminum hydride made using the process can be used as a hydrogen storage medium for a number of applications.
