BNL Hosts U.S./Japan Committee For Cooperation in High Energy Physics

The 30th meeting of the U.S./Japan Committee for Cooperation in the Field of High Energy Physics was hosted this year by BNL on June 12 and 13. Dennis Kovar, DOE's Acting Associate Director of Science for High Energy Physics, and Fumihiko Takasaki, Japan's Director of the Institute of Particle & Nuclear Studies (IPNS) and Co-Chair of the High Energy Research Organization (KEK), signed the record of the meeting, which included reviews of the past year's accomplishments and cooperative plans for the upcoming year.

New Grants for Nonprofits To Promote Science, Math and More

Nonprofit community organizations in Suffolk County still have until July 18 to apply for BNL's new BreakThru Mini-Grants. Local organizations may receive up to $5,000 to fund a new or existing program intended to increase interest and strengthen skills in science, technology, engineering, and math among 10- to 15-year-old female, African American, Hispanics/Latino, and/or Native American students.

U.S. LHC Construction Project Declared Formally Complete

On June 25, the U.S. Large Hadron Collider (LHC) collaborations celebrated the achievement of Critical Decision 4B (CD-4B), which signals the formal completion of the U.S. construction commitments to what will be the world's most powerful particle accelerator. For Brookhaven scientists, this milestone signifies the end of almost 15 years of research and development, construction, and testing of critical components of the ATLAS detector and the LHC accelerator.

For the past few weeks, Lab community donations to benefit victims of the flooding in Myanmar and the earthquake in China have been recorded by the Chinese Students & Scholars Association and the Asian Pacific American Association. As of the BNL donation deadline of June 13, total donations reached $41,744. Brookhaven Science Associates generously matched the BNL dollar donations up to $25,000, for a total of $66,744.

Last year, as in the past, Brookhaven Lab's drinking water and the supply system that produces it were in full compliance with all applicable county, state and federal regulations regarding drinking-water quality, monitoring, operations, and reporting. The Plant Engineering Division is proud to report that BNL's water has never reached or exceeded what are called primary maximum contaminant levels.

About 20 dogs, puppies and their handlers will walk on Brookhaven Ave., train at Bldg. 400 and have lunch on the Berkner Hall patio. The dogs and their trainers will practice walking, sitting, navigating stairs and other everyday activities a service dog must do to assist its human partner.
