Backup Magnets Ready to Ship to LHC
Physicists and engineers in Brookhaven National Laboratory's Superconducting Magnet Division are in the final stages of assembling "replacement" magnets for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at Europe's CERN laboratory. Brookhaven built twenty magnets already installed at the 17-mile circular collider — based on designs initially used for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider here at Brookhaven. The replacements are intended to be on hand for as quick a switch as possible if they are needed. The Brookhaven team is also working on new magnet designs with improved capabilities for the LHC.

Electromagnet Move Down William Floyd Parkway
At midnight on June 24, 2013, a 50-foot-wide, circular electromagnet began the second leg of a 3,200-mile land and sea voyage from Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York to a new home at Fermilab in Illinois. During this leg, Emmert International transported the electromagnet 10 miles down William Floyd Parkway to the Smith Point Marina, where it was loaded on a barge later in the day.

On Saturday, June 22, 2013, a 50-foot-wide, circular electromagnet began its 3,200-mile land and sea voyage from Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York to a new home at Fermilab in Illinois. In the first part of the move, Emmert International and a team of Fermilab and Brookhaven Lab scientists and engineers transported the electromagnet across the Brookhaven Lab site to a staging area by its main gate.

Growing Cutting-edge X-ray Optics
Ever imagined that an Xbox controller could help open a window into a world spanning just one billionth of a meter? Brookhaven Lab’s Ray Conley grows cutting-edge optics called multilayer Laue lenses (MLL) one atomic layer at a time to focus high-energy x-rays to within a single nanometer. To achieve this focusing feat, Ray uses a massive, custom-built atomic deposition device, an array of computers, and a trusty Xbox controller. These lenses will be deployed at the Lab's National Synchrotron Light Source II, due to begin shining super-bright light on pressing scientific puzzles in 2015.

"A discovery! The Higgs? Why is this important? How it was done"
Data collected during 2011 and 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland, the world's highest-energy proton collider, has culminated in the discovery of a new particle that is about 135 times heavier than a proton. But is it really the Higgs particle predicted by the theory that explains the origin of the mass of most elementary particles in the universe? The discovery and its possible identity is discussed by two Brookhaven Lab physicists, Sally Dawson and Howard Gordon, with deep roots in the hunt for the Higgs.

A novel multimodal optical nanoprobe is incorporated into a transmission electron microscope (TEM) sample holder. Hot Quark Soup Produced at RHIC
The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC, http://www.bnl.gov/rhic ) is a 2.4-mile-circumference particle accelerator/collider that has been operating at Brookhaven Lab since 2000, delivering collisions of heavy ions, protons, and other particles to an international team of physicists investigating the basic structure and fundamental forces of matter. In 2005, RHIC physicists announced that the matter created in RHICs most energetic collisions behaves like a nearly perfect liquid in that it has extraordinarily low viscosity, or resistance to flow. Since then, the scientists have been taking a closer look at this remarkable form of matter, which last existed some 13 billion years ago, a mere fraction of a second after the Big Bang. Scientists have revelaed new findings, including the first measurement of temperature very early in the collision events, and their implications for the nature of this early-universe matter.

High-Density Concrete Used in NSLS-II Construction
When the NSLS-II is running, electrons traveling at nearly the speed of light and forced by magnets around a circular storage ring will produce energy in the form of light known as synchrotron radiation. Lead and concrete shielding around the injector and storage rings and along the beamlines will provide protection against these photons and neutrons, and radiation exposure to personnel working on the NSLS-II floor will be quite low. In this video, BNLs lead structural engineer Tom Joos describes how higher-density concrete can be used where shielding is particularly necessary.

The funds are part of $1.2 billion announced by Secretary of Energy Steven Chu from funding allocated under the Recovery Act to DOEs Office of Science. Another First at NSLS-II Construction Site
Workers at the NSLS-II ring building construction site recently completed the first complicated concrete pour for the approximately 19-ft.-tall walls of the Utility Tunnel. The continuous pour was the first of its kind, as previous pours have been for footings and the foundations of footings. The construction team has estimated the entire project will use 40,000 cubic yards of concrete. To date, they have used 1,000 cubic yards, leaving 39,000 cubic yards of concrete to go!

RHIC Renaissance Celebration
A celebration of the contribution that Renaissance Technologies, Inc., made to the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, during which the entire Lab community participated in a series of RHIC Renaissance events, beginning with the Roads to Discovery ceremony, followed by a 1.8-mile 'Collide the Ions' walk for autism research around the newly re-dedicated RHIC Ring Road. First Concrete Poured for NSLS-II Ring Building
The first bits of the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) ring building are now taking shape after the concrete-pouring process for the new, world-class facility began on Monday, July 20. Once complete, the 400,000 square-foot building will house the accelerator ring, the largest component of the machine.

The Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS)

Copper vs. Copper at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
To investigate a new form of matter not seen since the Big Bang, scientists are using a new experimental probe: collisions between two beams of copper ions. The use of intermediate size nuclei is expected to result in intermediate energy density - not as high as in earlier runs colliding two beams of gold ions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), but more than was produced by colliding a beam of gold ions with much lighter deuterons.

Physicists working at the Brookhaven National Lab's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are exploring the puzzle of proton spin as they begin taking data during the 2009 RHIC run. For the first time, RHIC is running at a record energy of 500 giga-electron volts (GeV) per collision, more than double the previous runs in which polarized proton beams collided at 200 GeV. Particle Physics Masterclass
Students from six local high schools -- Farmingdale, Sachem East, Shoreham, Smithtown East, Ward Melville, and William Floyd -- came to Brookhaven National Laboratory to experience research with particle physicist Helio Takai. They were among more than 6,000 high school students from around the world who participated in the annual international Hands-on Particle Physics Masterclasses. In this program, now involving 23 countries, particle physicist mentors show the students how to use data gathered by the large particle collider experiments at CERN, the European Center for Nuclear Research, to unravel hidden secrets of high energy physics.

The weeklong crash course is designed to introduce participants to the best and latest equipment and techniques for macromolecular x-ray crystallography. The students also get to meet and learn from the leading developers of software in the field, and then actually use the NSLS beamlines to collect data. High-Temperature Superconductivity
Like astronomers tweaking images to gain a more detailed glimpse of distant stars, physicists at Brookhaven National Laboratory have found ways to sharpen images of the energy spectra in high-temperature superconductors — materials that carry electrical current effortlessly when cooled below a certain temperature. These new imaging methods confirm that the electron pairs needed to carry current emerge above the transition temperature, before superconductivity sets in, but only in a particular direction.

Fifty years ago, before either arcades or home video games, visitors waited in line at Brookhaven National Laboratory to play Tennis for Two, an electronic tennis game that is unquestionably a forerunner of the modern video game. Two people played the electronic tennis game with separate controllers that connected to an analog computer and used an oscilloscope for a screen. The game's creator, William Higinbotham, was a physicist who lobbied for nuclear nonproliferation as the first chair of the Federation of American Scientists.

Evidence to date suggests that gold-gold collisions the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven are indeed creating a new state of hot, dense matter, but one quite different and even more remarkable than had been predicted. Instead of behaving like a gas of free quarks and gluons, as was expected, the matter created in RHIC's heavy ion collisions appears to be more like a "perfect" liquid.

A guided tour of Brookhaven's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) conducted by past Laboratory Director John Marburger. RHIC is a world-class scientific research facility that began operation in 2000, following 10 years of development and construction. Hundreds of physicists from around the world use RHIC to study what the universe may have looked like in the first few moments after its creation. RHIC drives two intersecting beams of gold ions head-on, in a subatomic collision. What physicists learn from these collisions may help us understand more about why the physical world works the way it does, from the smallest subatomic particles, to the largest stars.

National Synchrotron Light Source II
The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory is a proposed new state-of-the-art medium energy storage ring designed to deliver world-leading brightness and flux with top-off operation for constant output. The facility will be able to produce x-rays up to 10,000 times brighter than those produced at the existing NSLS. Design and engineering of the new light source began in 2007 and construction and operations are expected to being in 2009 and 2015, respectively.
