Dynamic Information Modules

Another nice feature available with standardized websites that are hosted on www.bnl.gov is dynamic information modules. At present, there are three dynamic modules available: newsfeeds, events calendar and staff directories.

Newsfeeds

Newsfeeds supply the latest Laboratory news headlines to your webpage, eliminating the duplicative practice of hand-copying content from another website into your own. Newsfeeds are available in many different categories, including by department or overall topic (an example of a newsfeed displaying all recent science-related news is shown at right). Using a dynamic newsfeed ensures that the news on your page is always up to date. Best of all, no maintenance is ever required on your part.

BNL websites currently using this feature include the BNL home pageChemistry Department, the Physics Department, the Center for Functional Nanomaterials and the Center for Translational Neuroimaging.

Events Calendar

Similarly, an events module can supply your web page with a listing of the latest events pertinent to your organization. Specific events can be called from the master BNL Events Database, such as lectures which are sponsored by your department. New events may be submitted to the system by anyone possessing a valid BNL Life Number (see the Events Calendar page). BNL websites currently using this feature include the following:

Staff Directories

Staff directories which are hand-maintained are typically one of the first pages of a website to become outdated. Staff information changes frequently and is hard to keep up with. One solution to this problem is to take advantage of a centralized Laboratory information resource: the LDAP directory. This is the same data source which supplies records to the Laboratory's phone directory web page. A customized module which only extracts information relevant to your organization can be created and placed on your website.
