Adding Images

When adding images to your web pages, please do not exceed 500 pixels in width (see below). This ensures that the established margins remain unchanged and avoids other unexpected display problems. Not sure of the size? Either look at the image's property information or download this onscreen virtual ruler to check dimensions. All images should be optimized for the web. "Optimize" means that the files size has been reduced to be as small as possible while still being clear. You can do this in several ways:

  • Reduce the image's physical size
  • Reduce the number of colors displayed in the image
  • Reduce the resolution of the image in terms of dots per inch (dpi). Typical computer monitor resolution is 72 dpi.
  • If you have Photoshop, use the "Save for Web..." option

Image Resizing & Optimization

If You Must Display a Larger Image...

If you can't get away with an image that's 500 pixels wide or smaller because of text illegibility, etc., use the one column template. If you use this option, your image should be equal to or less than 700 pixels in width.
