BGRR Operations: Sample Handling
Scene at the north face of the BGRR, location of the system of pneumatic tubes for moving small samples of material in and out of the reactor for irradiation by neutrons. While the technician in the foreground uses tongs to uncap a tube, his colleagues use monitoring instruments to ensure that exposure levels from the sample are within acceptable limits. The radioactive sample is lifted by tongs into a lead container for safe handling and shipment to its destination.
