In Memoriam: James Desmond

James Lawrence Desmond, 72, of Charlottesville, died at his home on Friday, September 5, 2008. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree cum laude in economics from Mt. St. Mary’s College, Maryland, Desmond came to BNL in November 1963 as Executive Assistant to Vincent O’Leary in the Director’s Office. In January 1967, he was appointed Senior Budget Analyst, and later, Business Manager. His contributions as Business Manager were particularly commended for his work on establishing policies and procedures in the Work For Others management process. In May 1987, he left the Lab to become Associate Director for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Charlottesville, remaining there for 21 years.
A member Parish Council of St. Thomas Aquinas and the Knights of Columbus, Jim Desmond is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Alice Read Desmond, eight children, Margaret Desmond (Rowan) and husband John, James and wife Lisa, Michael and wife Suzanne, Mary Kate Capuano and husband Louis, Terence and fiancé Ilene Fox, David and wife Maureen, Alice Fletcher and husband Eric, Sarah Spears and husband Mike; two siblings, Judy Carey and Daniel Patrick Desmond; and 12 grandchildren, Jessica, Alyssa, Nikolas, Henry, Laura, Andrew, Ethan, John, Randi, Julia, Olivia and Lia.
Desmond’s daughter, Margaret Desmond, works as an Accountant at the Lab in the Fiscal Services Division, and son Jim Desmond III is a Business Operations Manager for the Life Sciences Departments at BNL.
