Upton, NY -- Mary White, who has been in management at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory since 1984, has been appointed Manager of the Laboratory's Information Services Division (ISD). She succeeds Diane Mirvis, who left the Laboratory for a new position in June. Ms. White had been Acting Head of the Division since that time.

Brookhaven's ISD has a staff of 57 and works closely with Brookhaven's numerous departments and divisions to prepare and disseminate scientific and technical information. Established in February 1995, ISD's responsibilities encompass overseeing Brookhaven's Research Library, records management, publications, video, photography, copy services, graphic design, composition and database support. Brookhaven's Research Library and the six departmental libraries it serves collectively contain 74,000 volumes.

"I will be building on the solid foundation established by my predecessor, and will continue to develop the most up-to-date technical solutions to information problems," Ms. White said. "I am fortunate because I have the support of a very competent and highly motivated staff."

Mary White earned her B.A. in Education and Spanish at the State University of New York at Cortland, and she pursued graduate studies in Romance Languages and Literature at the University of North Carolina. Her career started in the retail business, where she had been involved with various aspects of Human Resources, including training, recruitment and personnel management in department-store retailing. She rose to Corporate Director of Training for Gimbel's, New York, before joining Brookhaven in 1984 as Training and Development Administrator in the Personnel Division, now known as the Division of Human Resources.

Brookhaven National Laboratory carries out basic and applied research in physical, biomedical and environmental sciences and in selected energy technologies. Associated Universities, Inc., a nonprofit research management organization, operates the Laboratory under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy.

Mary White is a resident of Shirley, Long Island.
