"For outstanding commitment and dedication to the students of the community," Smithtown High School's Industry Advisory Board honored Louise Hanson of Ridge, who administers numerous pre-college educational programs at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, and John Black, a technical collaborator at Brookhaven Lab. Both are advisory board members, and Dr. Hanson is also co-chair of the board's Technology Education Subcommittee. The board's goal is to provide interaction between technology-based industry and students to better prepare students for the workplace. Dr. Hanson, a chemist, recently advised Smithtown High School Technology Honor Society students on choosing a technology project and following it through to completion. Mr. Black, a Patchogue resident and the coordinator of the Suffolk Community College Summer Field Program, mentored Smithtown High School student Nicholas Superina in an ecology study involving Brookhaven Lab's Gamma Forest. Based on this study, Superina became a finalist in the current Intel Science Talent Search.
