Upton, NY - Brookhaven National Laboratory has named Brian P. Sack as its Assistant Laboratory Director for Finance and Administration. In addition, Dr. Sack has been appointed Corporate Chief Financial Officer of Brookhaven Science Associates, the not-for-profit research management company that operates Brookhaven Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Dr. Sack replaces Henry Grahn, who retired in July 1998. While Brookhaven Lab conducted a nationwide search to fill the position, Gregory Ogeka served as Acting Assistant Laboratory Director and Chief Financial Officer for BSA.

In his new position, Dr. Sack is responsible for Brookhaven's Administrative Support Division, Division of Contracts and Procurement, Information Services Division, Budget Office and Financial Services Division. As the Laboratory's chief financial officer, Dr. Sack is responsible for a broad range of financial activities, including long-range financial planning, as well as planning and implementation of the Laboratory's fiscal matters and its approximately $400-million annual budget. As chief financial officer for BSA, he administers the company's $7.3-million annual budget.

Dr. Sack commented, "I believe my directorate's foremost priority is to provide the support necessary for Brookhaven to continue its outstanding scientific work and, secondly, to minimize the administrative burdens on technical organizations to the extent achievable within the requirements of the Department of Energy contract with BSA."

Brian P. Sack earned a B.S. in metallurgy in 1965, under a Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship and was commissioned as an ensign by the U.S. Navy. While on active duty, he did graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania under a Secretary of the Navy National Scholarship program and graduated in 1969 with a Ph.D. in metallurgy and materials science.

From 1969 to 1988, Dr. Sack held numerous other assignments in the U.S. Navy, including Deputy Director of the Materials and Quality Assurance Office and R& D Project Officer at the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C., from 1982-85. In 1985, Dr. Sack became Officer-in-Charge at the Carderock Laboratory of the David Taylor Research Center in Carderock, Maryland. In 1988, he retired at the rank of captain.

In 1988, Dr. Sack became Associate Head of the Administration Division at Lincoln Laboratory, a federally funded research and development center operated by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1991, he was appointed Division Head of the Administrative Division, and, in 1995, he became Assistant Laboratory Director for Administration at Lincoln Laboratory.

Brookhaven National Laboratory creates and operates major facilities available to university, industrial and government personnel for basic and applied research in the physical, biomedical and environmental sciences, and in selected energy technologies.
