UPTON, NY - A fire in a debris-sorting area was discovered today at 9:00 a.m. at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. No one has been injured.
The fire is in the southeastern part of the Laboratory, smoldering beneath plastic covering. Some of the debris contains low levels of radioactivity.
Initial air monitoring conducted in the areas surrounding the fire indicates that radiation levels are at normal background values. The area has been isolated and the fire is under control. The Laboratory's firefighters are on the scene and extinguishing the fire.
