Statement on IG Report on Emergency Medical Coordination

Michael Bebon, Assistant Lab Director for Facilities and Operations,
Brookhaven National Laboratory

Brookhaven Lab agrees with the recommendations of the Inspector General report and has already taken action to implement them.

Since the original memorandum of agreement was signed between the Laboratory and Stony Brook University Hospital, in 1999, Brookhaven Lab has provided radiological training to Stony Brook each year except for 2001. That year, the hospital declined our training because of a real-life incident - not at Brookhaven - that tested their response capabilities.

The Laboratory’s emergency personnel most recently participated in an emergency drill with Stony Brook University Hospital in December of 2002. The training we provide helps the hospital respond appropriately to victims of radiation accidents as well as to victims of industrial accidents in a radiation area, where they may become contaminated.

Brookhaven Lab now has an updated memorandum of understanding with Stony Brook, signed in 2003, and will ensure that its terms are fully implemented and that the document is reviewed and appropriately updated.
