Four Students Awarded 2003 Battelle-Brookhaven Women in Science Awards
UPTON, NY - In a ceremony at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, four female high school students who excel in science or mathematics were each given a $1,000 award to encourage them to pursue careers in those fields. The award was established in 1999 by Battelle, an Ohio-based corporation that partners with Stony Brook University to manage Brookhaven Lab through Brookhaven Science Associates, and by Brookhaven Women in Science (BWIS), a not-for-profit group at Brookhaven Lab whose aim is to promote the advancement of women.
Students from four school districts surrounding the Laboratory were chosen to receive the award this year. They are: Alison Castaneda, Longwood High School (front, third from right); Margaret Mars, Riverhead High School (front, fourth from right); Amy Morgenstern, Shoreham-Wading River High School (back, right); and Amelia Poquette, William Floyd High School (back, left). With the students are (from left) BWIS board members Loralie Smart, Pam Mansfield, Patricia Williams and Vinita Ghosh, and Brookhaven Lab Director Praveen Chaudhari.
