Battelle and Brookhaven Lab Provide Funds and Hands-on Help to William Floyd School District for its Participation in the FIRST Robotics Competition

UPTON, NY - Some of the approximately 50 students from William Floyd High School who participated in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition accompany Battelle representative Gregory Fess (third from right, front row) as he presents a check to the school district to help sponsor its participation in the contest. In addition, 20 engineering and fabrication staff members from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory helped the team build their robot for the contest.

The FIRST competition provides high school students with hands-on experience in solving a prescribed engineering problem in a competitive game environment. In 2003, more than 20,000 students representing over 800 teams took part in FIRST competitions. The William Floyd team came in fifth in the LI regional contest, competing among 34 schools. The team also won the Daimler Chrysler Award for showing the best team spirit.

In the photo, the students are accompanied by their William Floyd School District advisors Mike Whelan (far left, front), Chris Ryon (far right, front), and Karen Poidomani (left, second row); and mentors from Brookhaven Lab: Elizabeth Deazley (right, second row), Fred Walhert (far left, back), Joe Mondi (second from left, back), Chris Manning, (second from right, back) and Stan Doskoez (far right, back row).
