BWIS Leadership Workshop

Motivation

The focus of the BWIS Leadership Workshop is to regroup and revitalize our efforts to be more effective in achieving our goals and mission. We will discuss BWIS survey results, and review our mission, charter and plans forward. The workshop will also consist of training sessions on leadership and negotiation skills that will be women-centric, but open to men and women.

Session Information

  • Effective Leadership Skills for Women - Details
    Women scientists take on leadership roles every day, in the classroom, in their department or institution and in their professional organizations. The workshop includes presentations by the facilitator, small group discussion and experiential learning. This workshop is designed to give participants the basic concepts of leadership, describe recent research on leadership qualities that lead to success and failure, discuss effective leadership styles for women in different cultures, conduct a self-assessment to identify areas for skills enhancement, provide techniques and strategies for career advancement into leadership roles, assist in developing and maintaining strong leadership networks.
  • The Art of Effective Negotiation - Details
    Negotiations occur every day in the scientific laboratory and workplace and often involve issues that are key to research success and career advancement. This workshop teaches the fundamentals of negotiation relevant to a variety of one-on-one conversations and group settings. Topics include the importance of negotiation to advance research and career objectives, identification of negotiables including start-up packages, space, authorship, supplies, etc., necessary elements of a successful negotiation, the importance of developing alternatives to an agreement, techniques for handling difficult people and conversations, the importance of listening and appreciating different viewpoints and identification of short and long-term negotiation goals.

Committee Information

Brookhaven Women in Science (BWIS) is a volunteer-run non-profit organization based at BNL open to anyone, men and women, supporting the advancement of women in science. Annual BWIS activities include hosting Career Day for young women from nearby high schools, Science Fair for BERA Summer Camp participants, administration of the Gertrude S. Goldhaber Prize and Renate W. Chasman Scholarship, lectures and networking events. All of these programs are made possible with the support of Brookhaven Science Associates and BNL management.

Speakers (facilitators)

  • Geraldine Richmond - Presidential Chair and Professor of Chemistry at University of Oregon; chair of COACh, a grassroots organization assisting in the advancement of women-scientist in both the US and in developing countries.
  • Lisa Durham - Director of Leadership Institute at Argonne National Laboratory. With more than 20 years of experience in science and engineering, she has successfully navigated the federal research sector and is a long-time advocate for the advancement of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Evening Event

Registered participants are invited to attend the banquet dinner at Danford's Hotel & Marina (Upstairs Banquet Hall) on January 11, 2017. Please note, alcohol is excluded, cash bar only. Directions
