Cryogenic Systems Group

The cryogenics group operates, maintains and performs upgrades to the RHIC 25 kw helium refrigerator.  The refrigerator is a large facility similar to a power plant with compressors, pumps, turbines, valves and miles of piping.  Its purpose is to cool down and maintain RHIC’s 2.5 mile ring of magnets at approximately 4.5 K (-452F).  The cryogenic technicians and engineers are a highly skilled versatile group who perform a wide range of tasks ranging from making complex operational decisions while the facility is running, to performing difficult modifications, maintenance and repairs during summer shutdowns.  The cryogenics group also designs, fabricates, operates and maintains smaller cryogenic systems such as the AGS cold snake (pdf) magnet and the Energy Recovery Linac (ERL).
