Center for Emergent Superconductivity (CES)

2015 Fall Workshop

Motivation

The objective of the 2015 CES Fall Workshop is to bring together our CES researchers to strengthen existing collaborations and to identify new areas of fundamental research in superconductivity across our sites. It will also be a forum to prepare for the CES Mid-Term Review. We will charge our Executive Committee and other members of our EFRC to lead the discussions communicating our CES scientific goals and synergy. Our External Advisory Board (EAB) and Institutional Advisory Board (IAB) will be there to offer guidance.

The Research Topics will focus on our three themes:

  1. The quest for a grand unified theory of unconventional superconductivity, which includes high-temperature superconductivity (HTS).
  2. Our continued development of a Materials Genome leading to, in the long term, the predictive design of new HTS materials.
  3. Research on vortex matter towards the development of "critical-current-by-design" to quantitatively correlate the observed critical current density with the multi-scale mixed vortex pinning landscapes using realistic input parameters in an innovative and powerful large-scale time dependent Ginzburg-Landau approach to simulating vortex dynamics. We will present a status report of our current research and planned future research, and discuss preparation for the upcoming Mid-Program Review. We will hold a number of 'break-out' sessions related to our focus topics to identify new research directions, collaborations and to enhance the synergy and efficiency among the three CES institutions. IAB and EAB members will be interspersed among the sessions and provide input.

The Event will be held at Argonne National Laboratory from November 9-11, 2015. We will hold the Junior Researcher Symposium on the first day, November 9, followed by the main Workshop on November 10 till approximately noon of November 11.
