First Site-Wide Five Year Review Is Completed
BNL's Five-Year Review Reports are prepared pursuant to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) as administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The purpose of the Review is to determine whether the cleanup remedies implemented at BNL continue to be protective of human health and the environment. The methods, findings, and conclusions are documented and the issues found during the review are identified. Recommendations are provided to address them.
The first site-wide Five-Year Review, released on July 13, 2006, covered all of the Operable Units for the BNL site. However, some work had not yet been completed for soils at the Waste Loading Area (portion of the FHWMF), and work was not completed at the BGRR, the g-2 Tritium Plume and BLIP, and the HFBR. The second Site-wide Review, due in 2011, will cover those projects.
