Environmental Data Management

Brookhaven’s Environmental Sciences Department Environmental Data Management and Software Engineering Group (DMSE) created and manages an External Data Center (XDC) for the Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility. ARM conducts large-scale atmospheric sampling studies to gather data essential for improving how atmospheric variables such as aerosols and clouds are represented in climate models. The XDC collects, processes, and delivers a variety of climatological data collected by sources outside of ARM to the ARM Data Archive on a daily basis. DMSE has played a key role in developing the standards and the metadata for these diverse datasets to enable efficient discovery and analysis of the large ARM Data Archive.=

These datasets, and other ARM data, have the potential to provide much more value to the scientific community through additional visualization and analytical techniques. DMSE has also extended its scientific data management and information dissemination expertise to a project aimed at understanding and preparing for more intense weather related storms, and may participate in other large-scale urban studies such as the new drive toward Urban Next Generation Ecosystem Experiments (NGEE) to model ecosystem-climate feedbacks in cities.
