Computation and Data-Driven Discovery (C3D): Components

Image of biology data

The Department of Energy Systems Biology Knowledgebase (KBase)

KBase is a new community resource for predictive biology, led by scientists at Lawrence Berkeley, Argonne, Brookhaven, and Oak Ridge national laboratories. It integrates a wide spectrum of data about individual microbes, microbial communities, plants and interactions among them, and ties this data into a set of powerful computational tools that can analyze and simulate data to predict biological behavior, generate and test hypotheses, design new biological functions, and propose new experiments.

The overarching objective is to compile biological information and enable the construction of models that will help researchers optimize energy production and improve the environment. It is a multi-institutional program with partners at a number of leading universities, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the Joint Genome Institute, the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, and the DOE Bioenergy Centers.
