There is no evening or weekend food service available on-site. Food Options
Staff and visitors on site have access to food for purchase—some freshly prepared, some frozen—24 hours a day, seven days a week at BNL's micro-market. The micro-market is located in the Research Support Building (www.bnl.gov/guv/map.asp) (Bldg. 400). There, anyone on site can purchase beverages and food, including sandwiches, salads, soups, and frozen and prepackaged meals around the clock. After making selections, patrons pay at the self-checkout kiosk, which accepts cash as well as debit and credit cards.
Vending machines (including sandwiches, salads, beverages, coffee, ice cream, and microwaveable foods, as well as a selection of toiletries) are also located in the Post Office (www.bnl.gov/maps/point.php?Lat=40.86776&Lng=-72.88106) (Bldg. 179). A small eating area and microwave oven are also provided at both of these locations.
Overnight guests can prepare these items in the dorms and apartments, where they have access to full kitchens.
For guests arriving on-site when the cafeteria and Starbucks Café aren't open, the Housing Office and the Guest, User, Visitor Center also provide a list of restaurants in the local area that will deliver on-site without charging extra fees.
Guests planning to be on-site without vehicles for more than a day or two can also take advantage of the Lab's shopping shuttle service, which runs on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings, dropping off and picking up at Southport Plaza Shopping Center in Shirley. There, they can buy groceries at the Stop & Shop supermarket, and other necessities at Kohl's department store and more than 30 other stores.
Detailed information about the cafeteria, micro-market, vending machines and other on-site services can be found in the online guide (www.bnl.gov/staffservices/foodservices.php) to Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Three computer terminals are located in Berkner Hall (Bldg. 488) for internet access or accessing your email. You may also use the local network jacks to connect your own laptop as well.
If attendees bring laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc. that will require internet access during the workshop, then these devices must be registered in BNL's Network Access Registration database in order to access the internet.
Registering your computer device can be done via the device's web browser upon first connecting to BNL's network; however, the registration process will require a BNL life or guest number.
If you do not have a BNL-assigned life or guest number, a specially generated conference key will be provided to you on the first day of the workshop. This conference key is only valid during the actual days of the workshop. Please use this conference key in place of the BNL-assigned life or guest number.
Note: Attendees will only have 15 minutes to complete their computer registration. Computers will be blocked if registration is not complete in time. Please make sure you understand the process before starting or ask for assistance.
Windows Users: Only computers running Windows 7 and higher will be able to get internet access
If you have the conference key for your workshop and still experience connection problems, please contact the ITD Helpdesk (www.bnl.gov/itd/helpdesk/) (631.344.5522, itdhelp@bnl.gov) for assistance.
Fax machines are located in Berkner Hall (Bldg. 488) for those who require faxing services. The phone number for Berkner Hall's fax machine is 631-344-5568.
