Menzel Smith-Jones

I have been a part of the Brookhaven community for thirteen years, and for the past year, I have been serving in my current role as a Diversity Specialist. As a liaison between the DEI Office, employee resource groups (ERGs), and DEI councils, I take on the role of a champion for these groups. I actively participate in their meetings, working closely with them as a team member, and ensure their needs and concerns are effectively communicated back to the DEI Office. I excel at connecting the dots and facilitating collaboration. Recognizing that the members of ERGs and DEI Councils volunteer their time, I support them by handling administrative tasks and assisting in event planning and setup. By lightening their load, I strive to make their experience smoother and more enjoyable.

However, my efforts extend beyond the ERGs and DEI Councils. I believe in fostering a positive work environment for everyone in the office. Building friendships and strong relationships with colleagues across the Lab is a priority for me. Maintaining these connections allows for smoother collaboration and effective teamwork. It becomes easier to accomplish tasks when you have built rapport and fostered a supportive network. Whenever I require assistance, I can rely on my good relationships to reach out for help, knowing that others are willing to lend their time and support due to the positive interactions we have had.

One aspect of my job that brings me great joy is my involvement in our recruitment efforts. I have the privilege of informing young individuals, particularly talented minorities, about the opportunities available at Brookhaven. I take pride in being a part of an office that actively seeks to promote diversity and offers promising futures for underrepresented individuals. It is an incredibly rewarding experience to be a part of this initiative and contribute to its success.

My role as a liaison, my dedication to fostering positive relationships, and my involvement in recruitment efforts all contribute to my enthusiasm for the work I do. I find great satisfaction in being a part of a team that strives to make a difference and provides opportunities for individuals to thrive.
