On Jan. 8, Alistair Rogers of Brookhaven Lab’s Environmental Sciences Department received news that Benjamin November, a high school senior he mentored, is a semifinalist in this year’s Intel Science Talent Search. Rogers has now mentored three Intel semifinalists in the past four years.

One hundred students representing 13 middle schools from Long Island will participate in a Regional Science Bowl competition, which consists of two exciting contests: a fast-paced question-and-answer tournament designed to test students' knowledge in general, life, energy, earth and space sciences and mathematics and a lithium-ion battery-powered car competition that challenges students to design, build, and race model cars.

William Floyd High School sophomore Shannon Beattie has been working with a team of science teachers and researchers from Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Center for Advanced Radiation Sources at the University of Chicago to determine the origin of glacial erratics found on the north shore beaches of Long Island.
