Prachi Chitnis, a Stony Brook University student mentored by Kevin Brown, a scientist at Brookhaven Lab’s Collider-Accelerator Department, has been awarded the European Physical Society Award recognizing her rigorous research analyzing the reliability and vulnerabilities of collider detector systems that are important to experimental runs at the Lab’s Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

As a key player in the Long Island STEM Hub’s professional development day, Brookhaven Lab offered “SciEd Day,” a series of hands-on workshops for teachers across Long Island. The workshops were customized to build awareness about science and industry that are key to Long Island’s economy.

After earning his master’s and Ph.D. in physical chemistry at Stony Brook University, Robert Palomino is now one of Brookhaven Lab’s new postdocs in the Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate–Transformation program, working at the Lab’s new National Synchrotron Light Source II to analyze the structure and other properties of catalysts.

More than 500 science projects from 118 Suffolk County schools were entered into the 2015 Elementary School Science Fair. The Fair, sponsored by Brookhaven National Laboratory and coordinated by the Lab's Office of Educational Programs, was held at the Laboratory on May 2.

R.C. Murphy Junior High School of Stony Brook won the Brookhaven National Laboratory/Long Island Regional Middle School Science Bowl held at the Lab on Saturday, March 7, 2015. R.C. Murphy students competed against 19 teams from 13 schools across the region in one of the nation's 50 regional competitions in the Annual U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl®.

Farmingdale High School edged out 15 other teams to take top honors at the U.S. Department of Energy Regional Science Bowl held at the Lab on January 31. The team will compete in the National Finals in Washington, D.C. in April.
