NYSERDA Radar Observations for Modeling Utility Restoration

Weather radar systems provide detailed high-resolution (in time and space) observations of the characteristics of a storm (e.g. areal coverage, vertical extent, intensity). Our current work—in collaboration with Electrical Distribution Design, Orange and Rockland Utilities and Central Hudson Gas and Electric—involves relating these observations to utility equipment and customers through an Integrated System Model, with the goal of improving the ability to predict utility outages and the subsequent response and restoration. The BNL cloud processes group provides expertise on the analysis and interpretation of weather radar observations and the relation to utility outage information.
