Fire Management

Brookhaven National Laboratory

Brookhaven National Laboratory has developed a comprehensive Wildland Fire Management Plan to provide guidance on fire preparedness, fire prevention, wildfire suppression, and the use of controlled "prescribed" fires and mechanical means to control the amount of available combustible material.

In 2004, BNL started using prescribed fire as a natural resource management tool during the New York State Wildfire and Incident Management Academy. Burns were successfully completed in 2004, 2006, and 2011. The Prescribed Fire Plan is a field document that sets forth the details for conducting a particular burn treatment at a particular burn unit. The Prescribed Burn Plan is more specific than the Fire Management Plan and details the prescription parameters and professional standards to be used in conducting a burn.
