Brookhaven National Laboratory

ISO 14001 Environmental Management System

OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health & Safety Assessment Series

One of Brookhaven National Laboratory’s highest priorities is ensuring that the Laboratory’s environmental, safety and health (ESH) performance measures up to its world class status in science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA), the contractor operating the Laboratory on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy, takes ESH performance very seriously. As part of their commitment to responsible ESH operations, they have established an Environmental Management System (EMS) and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Management System.

In July 2001, Brookhaven’s EMS was certified by an independent, accredited organization to the ISO 14001 standard becoming the first DOE facility to achieve this status. In June 2007, Brookhaven's OSH Management System was certified by an independent, accredited organization to the OHSAS 18001 standard. Both systems are audited annually to ensure BNL meets rigorous certification requirements. The EMS and OSH management systems are a vital part of Brookhaven's Integrated Safety Management (ISM) program.
