C2QA Quantum Thursdays

"Variational Quantum Algorithms"

Presented by Sophia Economou, Virginia Tech

Thursday, April 29, 2021, 12:00 pm — Videoconference / Virtual Event (see link below)

Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) constitute a class of hybrid quantum-classical algorithms that are investigated primarily for NISQ processors. The majority of VQAs focus on quantum simulation, and particularly finding properties of many-body quantum systems, such as the ground state energies of complicated molecules. In VQAs, the quantum processor is where the quantum state is variationally prepared and measurements are made, while the classical computer performs optimization. A crucial element of VQAs is the choice of ansatz. I will give some background on VQAs and present highlights from our work on the preparation of efficient, problem-tailored ansatze for many-body simulation and optimization.
