The Asian Pacific American Association (APAA) at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory is now accepting applications for the 16th annual Mow Shiah Lin Scholarship.

The APAA's scholarship is a one-time award of $1,500 that will be presented to a student of Asian heritage with a U.S. student visa, who is matriculating toward a doctorate in environmental and energy technology, biology, or chemistry on Long Island. The APAA presents this scholarship in honor of the late Brookhaven Lab scientist for whom it is named, his distinguished research, achievements, and inventions.

This scholarship is made possible with support from the APAA and the fundraisers it hosts, Brookhaven Lab's Inclusion & Diversity Office, and individual contributions.

  • Enrolled in a doctoral program through May of 2021 at an accredited institution of higher education on Long Island (including Queens and Brooklyn).
  • Matriculating toward a doctorate in environmental and energy technology, biology, or chemistry

Selection criteria for the scholarship include academic records, references, career goals, civic/volunteer activities, and other factors deemed appropriate by the selection committee. About Mow Shiah Lin and the APAA

Mow Shiah Lin began his career at Brookhaven Lab in 1975 as a postdoctoral fellow, and he advanced to co-lead a research team working with an environmental remediation company to use selected bacteria to convert toxic oil wastes, such as used motor oils, into useful products. In 2001, Lin shared an R&D 100 Award, given by R&D Magazine to honor the top 100 technological achievements of the year, for a technology to recover silica from geothermal brine. Lin died suddenly from a brain aneurysm at the height of his career in 2003, and his fellow employees, friends, and family contributed funds to establish the scholarship.

The Asian Pacific American Association is one of seven employee resource groups, supporting an inclusive work environment and diverse workforce at Brookhaven Lab. The APAA promotes unity and awareness through educational, cultural, and social programs; the annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Month events; and through discussion of issues that affect the Asian Pacific American community at the Laboratory.
