Progress Towards “Ghost Imaging” Using X-Rays

To overcome the essential compromise of choosing between damaging the sample and precision of the image in an imaging x-ray experiment on biological samples, we are developing a mechanism to perform ghost imaging of biological samples using x-rays. This new approach will significantly reduce the beam intensity to produce high-resolution images. However, to create a functional microscope we will need to overcome significant technological challenges, the production of new sources for quantum entangled x- rays, and the development of mathematical/computational methods that reflect the changes in the experiments performed. Therefore, we have formed a multidisciplinary team across Brookhaven Lab to tackle each of these challenges in sequence.
