Performance Analysis and Modeling Workshop

Modern high performance computing architectures often feature increased levels of parallelism and more complex machine configurations that can impact application code performance. The first step of code modernization and optimization is to understand the inherent computational bottlenecks and target the software development efforts on these areas.

Performance analysis tools can provide an entry point for developers to pinpoint the "hotspots" of the application code, and identify main bottlenecks of code performance. Performance modeling, on the other hand, can give developers an idea of what performance to expect on the target hardware platform given the arithmetic operations, data access patterns and communication requirements of the code. Together, performance analysis and modeling tools will help guide the code development and optimization of scientific applications in all domains.

Workshop Goal

This hands-on workshop will introduce the concepts of performance analysis and modeling to the participants. We will use the TAU performance system as an example, and participants will have the opportunity to use TAU to analyze their own application codes. In addition, members of the CODAR (an Exascale Co-Design Center for Data Analysis and Reduction) Chimbuko team will share their use experiences of TAU.

We will also have a tutorial on performance modeling given by Dr. Adolfy Hoisie, chair of the Computing for National Security department at CSI, and presentations on the Roofline Performance Model given by computational scientists from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.


Participation in the workshop is free of charge. However, we ask all the participants to register by January 14, 2018. And we encourage participants to come in teams of at least 2 people who work on the same application code. Space is limited. First come, first served.
