Our Mission and Objectives

The Strategic Partnerships Office connects people and organizations from outside with our Laboratory researchers. Private industry research collaborations, commercializing Brookhaven’s technology, and supporting the growth of local technology-based businesses are all examples of how we fulfill our mission.

These partnerships may begin with a company’s science challenge or with a Laboratory researcher’s new breakthrough. In either case, the Strategic Partnerships Office (SPO) is committed to making it as easy as possible for potential partners to engage with Brookhaven National Laboratory, and for our researchers to engage with external partners.

Laboratory-wide Responsibilities

Lab growth

Laboratory Growth Programs

Brookhaven Lab is committed to expanding its sponsored research and development with private sector companies, federal agencies, non-profit organizations and state/non-federal agencies. In addition, DOE Offices outside our primary sponsor, the Office of Science, are anticipated to expand their work with the Lab. Offices such as EERE. ARPA-E and NNSA, are expected to provide additional opportunities for the Lab’s scientific capabilities.

SPO has the Lab-wide responsibility to work with researchers to develop the Lab’s Growth Strategy. This Growth Strategy is new to the Laboratory in 2015. Its purpose is to ensure Brookhaven’s commitment to sustainable growth of our research programs is realized.

tech commericalization

Technology Commercialization

Commercializing new research discoveries and technologies at Brookhaven National Laboratory includes discovering, protecting and licensing the Laboratory’s intellectual property. The Laboratory, through our Office of Technology Commercialization & Partnerships, has a history of successful partnerships translating our ideas into commercial successes.

An important part of commercializing technology is building and supporting the entrepreneurial community within the Lab and our local community, as well as engaging with existing businesses.  We engage through local and national organizations and networks with these entrepreneurs and potential investors. In this way, Brookhaven plays a significant role in supporting rapid growth of technology-based enterprises.

For more information about commercializing or licensing technology, contact Poorni Upadhya, or see the Technology Commercialization website.
