Unfortunately, MIT does not have any visitor housing available during the school year. These are your next choices:

Hotels

The phrase "cheap hotel" is an oxymoron in the Boston area. These places are the most convenient to the MIT campus:

• Cambridge Marriott, 2 Cambridge Center (617) 494-6600

  Directly across the street from the MIT campus. Subway stop is located directly in front of hotel. Rates: Because the meeting date is so close, it was not possible to reserve a block of rooms. MIT Corporate rate is $161/night. However, the Marriott has a Super Saver weekend rate of $139/night if you stay April 4, 5, and 6. Call immediately--for some strange reason that weekend is very popular.

• Howard Johnson, 777 Memorial Drive (617) 492-7777

  Down Memorial Drive from MIT. Not on a direct subway or bus route, but 10-15 minute walk. Credit card needed to make reservation. Rates: A block of 10 rooms is being held under "Phobos" until March 28. The MIT rate is $125/night. After March 28, rooms will still be available at the MIT corporate rate on a space-available basis.

• Holiday Inn, 5 Blossom St, Boston (617) 742-7630

  Across bridge from MIT. Halfway between subway stops. Walking distance across bridge. Credit card needed to make reservation. MIT Corporate rate: $149/night + tax.

• Harvard Square Hotel, 110 Mt. Auburn St. Cambridge (617) 864-5200

  In Harvard Square, 2 subway stops from MIT. Credit card needed to make reservation. MIT Corporate rate: $135/night + tax.

• Howard Johnson, 575 Commonwealth Ave., Boston (617) 267-3100

  
  By Boston University, near Green line subway stop. A short taxicab ride from MIT. Credit card needed to make reservation. Although they had an MIT corporate rate as recently as last month, the reservations manager there now claims as of 3/31/97 that they have never had an agreement with MIT, and are not planning on making one any time soon. Rate: $145/night + tax.

Boarding Houses/Bed & Breakfasts

If you don't mind sharing a bathroom, these places are much more cost-effective.

• A Friendly Inn at Harvard Square, 1673 Cambridge St., Cambridge (617) 547-7851

  B & B located outside Harvard Square, away from MIT. Rate: $77/night, MIT 10% discount.

• The Irving House, 24 Irving St., Cambridge (617) 547-4600

  B & B. Includes free off-street parking. Rates: Single, shared bath: $55/night + tax; Single, private bath: $75/night + tax; Double, private bath: $100/night + tax.

• Boarding House of Eloeve McDaniels, 241 Washington St., Cambridge (617) 876-8308

  Many Phobos collaborators have stayed here with no complaint. Shared bath, kitchen facilities available, longer walk to MIT.Rate: $45/night.
