Study of the energy deposited per particle

at the mid-rapidity region

(addendum to the report on the analysis of the PMC simulations)

                Barbara Wosiek 02/04/00

This is a summary of the analysis of energy deposited per particle at midrapidity. In this study only tracks with nhits > 0 are considered (TH - all tracks, PH - primaries). In addition only tracks with   -2 <= eta <  2  are accepted and only those which hit Octagon sensors.

Multiplicities of particles, selected according to the above requirements are listed in Table I (TH tracks) and in Table II (PH tracks).

The next Tables contain values of the average energy deposited per hit per particle,  <Edep>.  The energy deposited was corrected for the angle of incidence and the following 'truncation' was adopted: A. if(Edep > 1000 keV) Edep = 1000 keV.

There are differences (Table III) in  <Edep> up to about 5% as compared to central Hijing events, and also ratios of TH/PH (see Table I and II) differ up
to about 5%. For 'plasma 30%' and central Venus both these effects would cause underestimation of the multiplicity by about 9% (~5% for 'plasma 15%') if reconstructed with the parameters derived from central Hijing events.

<Edep> obviously is very sensitive to the applied truncation.  So now we change it to the one that I believe is used in the present reconstruction code:
  B. if(Edep > 500 keV) Edep = 500 keV.

With the 'truncation' if(Edep > 500 keV) Edep = 500 keV, the differences in <Edep> (Table V) are somewhat smaller, the difference in TH/PH is the same as before (all tracks with hits are accepted) and the final effect would be the underestimation by about 7.5 % (6.7%) of the multiplicity  of primaries with hits at midrapidity for 'plasma 30%' (central Venus) events if reconstructed with the code tuned to central Hijing.
  C. Hits with Edep <= 1000 keV only   I have also tried to apply the sharp cut at 1000 keV, i.e. only those hits are accepted for which the Edep <= 1000 keV while those with Edep > 1000 keV are rejected. This of course leads to loose some tracks (those highly ionizing with only 1 hit per track).  The advantage of this cut is, however, that we loose secondaries while primaries remain intact (at the level of ~0.3%). Tables VII-X summarize the results obtained with this cut.

Using this cut and tuning to central Hijing events we obtain midrapidity multiplicities (of primaries with hits) underestimated by 6.4% (4.9%) for 'plasma 30%' (central Venus) events.

     My plans:
