Removal of Full Octagon Detector
Date:
I) Setup
No jewelry, watches, or loose sleeves
Long hair tied, shoe laces tied
Shirts tucked in properly, nothing loose in shirt pockets
Floor cleared (from Chemistry building to the car and in tunnel)
All other people should be clear from the area
No passage of anyone through the area during operation or crossing area to transportation
Only 1 person will speak at a time, usually the persons leading the action or the person who is performing a certain action (releasing handles, pin in place, etc)
Whenever someone sees a problem, then this person SHOULD SAY STOP. The response of the other people will be that they freeze. Action will only proceed after the person who issued the STOP has explained and the problem is resolved.

Arrangements have been made with Connie that no deliveries are made in parking lot

II) Removal from Interaction Region
Personnel: Alan, Birger, Rachid, Mike, and Robert
Preparation:
- Remove Ring counter behind octagon
- Pull octagon detector back from IR
- Empty and disconnect all water hoses from frame
- Disconnect 'C'-cables from 'D' cables
- Remove 'C' cables from FEC's
- Remove FEC crates
- Remove support for FEC crates behind octagon
- Disconnect output hoses
- Disconnect two halves of back plate
- Remove back plate halves – leave ‘C’ cables attached
- Remove manifold supply hose
- Remove water manifold from support (save Al spacer between screws and manifold)
- Remove water manifold support (screws in from below)
- Remove part of enclosure above octagon
- Table A: Just inside fence -
- Table B: Next to beamline - octagon support on top
- Table C: Next to cooling system on opposite side of beamline
- Whole fence removed
- Spare transport bottom along side octagon on outer half in same orientation
Step 1: Removal of top half
Initial position:
Birger, Rachid, Mike on outer side
Robert and Alan on inner side
Spare transport placed on table C
- Plexiglas cover removed
- Handles mounted opening facing beamline
Action:
- Rachid installs rear stand off w. handle mounted
- Alan and Birger install stand off in front
- Alan removes screws on inner side
- Birger removes screws on outer side
- Birger holds on to front end - Rachid in back
- Birger and Rachid slowly remove upper half - Birger's left hand touch enclosure
- Alan observes and guides on other side
- Mike observes behind Birger
- Birger and Rachid move slowly to table C
- Place mylar sheet on top for protection
- Mike screws stand-offs onto handles while Birger and Rachid hold upper half in each end
- Mike removes little handle from rear stand off
- Mike and Rachid install Plexiglas cover on upper half
Octagon top is now safely stored on table C
Step 2: Removal of bottom half
Personnel: Mike, Birger, Robert, Alan and Rachid
Initial position:
Table B pulled back from corner
Mike, Birger and Robert on outer side
Alan and Rachid on inner side
Robert reads checklist
Action:
- Measure and record height of the octagon support ~ 393 mm from plate
- Loosen locking nuts
- Rachid and Birger lowers structure as follows, while Robert puts downward pressure on rear of support structure:
- One turn down on front chain
- One turn down on front lock nuts
- Follow down with rear lock nuts
- One turn down on rear chain
- Repeat slowly 30 times in total - Mike keeps count
- Mike removes securing screws through black plate
- Mike installs outer handle – two screws only
- Rachid and Alan remove adjustment stops and retaining screws
- Rachid and Alan remove securing screws through black plate
- Mike removes track screws, but leaves the outermost
- Mike holds on to black handle on his side
- Rachid installs inner handle – two screws only
- Mike and Birger install counterweight support – 2 screws each side
- Birger installs counterweight
- Rachid into corner by spectrometer
- Alan and Birger pushes table B into corner and props it up with and wooden shims on floor
- Birger places slide plate to align with black plate
- Rachid and Mike observe front end to make sure beam line is not touched by the pin
- Alan and Mike slide support sideways toward inner side
- Rachid guides the front - watch beam pipe and enclosure
- Alan and Birger slide/lift support onto slide plate and align with marks in a sliding/rotating motion
- Alan and Birger slide the whole structure on table to the opposite corner - no rotation
- Mike observes from other side
- Rachid stays in corner for now
Step 3: Move bottom half from support structure to table A
Initial position:
Rachid in corner
Mike next to Rachid on other side of spectrograph rails
Alan behind frame
Birger next to frame
Robert reads instructions
Octagon transport box placed on inner half of table A with handles secured and open inward
Action:
- Birger removes screws which secure frame to support structure near vertex (normally this is a through pin)
- Alan and Rachid hold each end of octagon bottom by the handles
- Birger removes two rear screws which attach bottom half onto support structure
- Rachid lifts up front to clear support structure in vertex region
- Alan lifts up rear end
- Birger stands near front end
- Rachid hands off to Birger
- Alan and Birger move to table A
- Alan and Birger rotate frame 90 deg. about long axis – Alan counter clockwise
- Alan and Birger rotate another 90 deg.
- Place protection on top
- Mike attaches stand-offs to handles
- Remove protection
- Mike unsecures handles and hold bottom down
- Alan and Birger rotate bottom frame 180 degrees – Alan counter clockwise
- Place back onto bottom plate again
- Mike secures handles on bottom plate
- Alan and Mike remove table B to let Rachid out
Step 4: Assembly of upper and lower halves
Personnel: Alan, Birger, Robert, Mike, Nigel and Rachid
Initial position:
Alan, Birger, Rachid near table C
Mike, Robert inside blue underpass
Nigel reads instructions
Action:
- Rachid and Birger take handles at front end
- Alan take rear handles
- Move toward –Z and turn such that Birger and Rachid are at underpass
- Rachid and Birger secure grip under box
- Allow Mike and Robert to take handles under beamline
- Rachid and Birger duck under beamline
- Rachid and Birger hold on to rear part of box
- Alan lets go
- Upper part is placed on outer half of table A
- Birger and Rachid remove Plexiglas cover
- Birger places protection on top
- Alan in front, Rachid in rear hold frame by stand-offs
- Birger removes screws from handles while Alan and Rachid hold
- Alan and Rachid place top half onto bottom half – guiding pins in outermost ribs with other hand
- Birger installs screws holding top and bottom together – four corners first
- Birger installs Plexiglas cover
Status: Ready for transport to Chemistry
III) Transport from the Tunnel to the Chemistry Building
Personnel: Alan, Birger, Mike, Rachid, Robert, and Nigel
Start position:
MIT van backed up to east entrance door in parking lot – bubble wrap installed in center of van, rear gate open
Police escort waiting in 1010 parking lot
Assembled Octagon sitting on the table A in transport box
Action:
- Robert checks that passage to entrance gate is clear
- Robert tends solid door at maze
- Birger and Rachid hold front handles, Alan rear handles
- Nigel walks in front, Mike in back
- Stop just inside entrance gate
- Nigel opens and holds gate
- Robert walks in front to van
- Robert gives "all clear" instruction
- Carriers walk through 1010 service building and stop behind van
- Robert and Mike enter van to receive octagon
- Birger & Rachid hand over front end to Robert and Mike
- Birger and Rachid reach under box for support
- Octagon is placed in cushioning material in van
- Robert and Mike exit van
- Rachid enters van from rear, Birger through right side
- Alan closes rear door from outside
- Robert drives van – Alan is passenger
- Mike, and Nigel drive to Chemistry area to prepare
- Drive under police escort 5 mi/hour the following route: drive around the RHIC ring via Brahms, Cornell Avenue east
- Van parked with rear facing east door of Chemistry
- Rachid and Birger stay in van
Preparations in Chemistry Area
Personnel: Mike and Nigel
Start position:
1) Nigel controls area inside Chemistry
2) Everybody else near van
Action:
Nigel gives all clear signal
Alan open rear gate of van
Rachid and Birger exits van
Alan enter van through side door
Nigel and Robert behind van, and Alan start lifting out
Nigel and Robert pass to Birger and Rachid, reach in and lift under rear of box, move away from van
Alan exits van and takes over rear handles
Robert tends door to hallway
Carriers walk through hallway to Si lab with Nigel
Mike opens and holds door to Si lab
Carriers proceed into lab and place octagon on table
