A Workshop on the Publishing Landscape in Applied Physical Science
The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) invites members of the
Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) community to a one-day workshop on
Wednesday, October 22, 2014 on the Publishing Landscape in Applied Physical
Science. Representatives from the
AIP Publishing and the Brookhaven Research Library will present valuable information
about the current landscape, trends, careers, and practical activities
associated with scientific publishing.
AIP Publishing is sponsoring this workshop in order to bring students, post-docs, scientists, and researchers together to learn more about publishing.
Topics that will be covered include: How to publish your research to
resonate effectively with your scientific community, adding unique value to
your research work, and careers in publishing.
Participants in the workshop will have an opportunity to:
- Learn about choosing the right journal to showcase your research
- Explore the current trends in scientific publishing
- Consider alternate scientific careers, among other topics.
- Part 1: How to publish your research to
resonate effectively with your scientific community - Participants
will learn about the scope and editorial direction of AIP Publishing
titles to help scientists make an informed decision on where they
could publish. How does publishing allow you to become a more
integrated member of your respective scientific community? How do
you publish special content, such as Perspective Articles, Review
Articles, Special Topic Issues of Journals, etc.?
- Part 2: Adding value to your work - The workshop
will engage participants about how to publicize their work
effectively, how value can be added to your manuscripts by the
publisher, and what you can do to make your work more visible and
- Part 3: BNL Journal & Publishing Overview
- This session will provide an update on the Department of
Energy's response to the OSTP directive: "Expanding Public
Access to the Results of Federally Funded Research."
Participants will learn about changes to BNL's process for
publishing journal articles, the author's role in submitting
publications for Laboratory review and approval, and the
resources available to assist authors with the preparation and
submission of their research publications.
- Part 4: Lunchtime Session on Careers - This
will be a discussion on career options for students and
researchers in the physical sciences. The session will help
participants learn how to identify their skills and translate
them from the laboratory to their resume and eventually the
- Part 5: Interacting with Content - What do
researchers want when they read an article? AIP Publishing will
present current trends of interaction between readers and content
and new products and services that are being developed to facilitate
