Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Small Business Program Overview

Mentor-Protégé Program

BSA has established a Mentor-Protégé Program to  assist small businesses, firms certified under section 8(a) of the Small Business Act by SBA, other small disadvantaged businesses, women-owned small businesses, Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Institutions, other minority institutions of higher learning and small business concerns owned and controlled by service disabled veterans in enhancing their business abilities.

Eligibility Requirements

To participate as a protégé, a small business must have less than half the size standard corresponding to its primary NAICS code, must not be owned or managed by individuals or entities that directly or indirectly have stock options or convertible securities in the mentor firm and must be:

  1. a small business concern owned and controlled by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals;
  2. a business entity owned and controlled by an Indian tribe;
  3. a business entity owned and controlled by a Native Hawaiian Organization;
  4. a qualified organization employing severely disabled individuals;
  5. a small business concern owned and controlled by women;
  6. a small business concern owned and controlled by service–disabled veterans;
  7. a qualified HUBZone small business concern; or
  8. a small business concern that —
    1. is a nontraditional defense contractor; or
    2. currently provides goods or services in the private sector that are critical to enhancing the capabilities of the defense supplier base and fulfilling key Department of Defense needs
