Motivation

Whether you're just beginning your science career as a college student, finishing your Ph.D. thesis, or working as the head of a huge national or university lab, knowing how to communicate what you do to various audiences is vital to becoming (and staying) a successful scientist. Brookhaven Lab's Media & Communications Office will be offering a Science Communication Workshop for summer interns on Tuesday, August 4. You’ll come away from these sessions with tools to help you describe your research to a wide range of audiences, including funding agencies, reporters, family members, and fellow students.

WHEN: Tuesday, August 4, 2020, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time.

HOW: This workshop will be held as an interactive virtual conference using the BlueJeans Event app. A link will be provided to registrants prior to the event.

REGISTRATION: Registeration is limited to 50 participants, so please register now. Interested interns should speak with their Brookhaven mentors about taking time to participate. Please register by Tuesday, July 28, 2020.

Agenda

This workshop will consist of an overview presentation followed by a chance for students to present an “elevator speech” description of their own research with feedback offered by professional science communicators and other workshop participants. Brookhaven Lab's science communicators will introduce different approaches to communicating scientific material. We will use examples and help you develop skills for "translating" science into non-technical spoken and written language for more effective, engaging communication with a range of audiences.

This hands-on training will help you develop talking points for your poster presentation, write social media posts, prepare for media interviews, and feel more at ease when describing how you spent your summer at Brookhaven Lab. It is NOT designed to help you write a technical abstract for your project.

Joining the Virtual Meeting - The workshop coordinator will provide you with the Meeting ID and any optional passcode in a seperate email. Please do not give out this connection information, it is only for registered participants.

We look forward to working with you!

Optional suggestion: Prior to the workshop you might want to think about some ways to describe your research to someone who knows nothing about it. Bring your ideas or jotted notes and we'll help you expand on those ideas at the session!
