As manager of the Office of Technology Commercialization and Partnerships (TCP), Walter Copan is responsible for Brookhaven National Laboratory technology transfer and deployment functions. These include developing and managing the intellectual property portfolio of the Laboratory, and translating these inventions into innovative products and services with corporate partners, R&D collaborators, entrepreneurs and investors. Additionally, TCP manages the sponsored research and technology partnerships agreements, as well as economic development and entrepreneurship programs of BNL. TCP also provides support to business development and major proposals for funding and development through the BNL Proposal Center.
Prior to joining Brookhaven National Laboratory in 2010, Dr. Walter Copan had served as Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Clean Diesel Technologies, Inc., a company providing sustainable solutions for transportation and distributed power markets that he successfully brought onto NASDAQ (CDTI) in 2007. He was previously Principal Licensing Executive at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Prior to joining NREL, Dr. Copan was Managing Director, Technology Transfer and Licensing for The Lubrizol Corporation, responsible for corporate ventures, technology strategy, new business development and licensing. Previous roles at Lubrizol include leadership in research and development, business unit management, international commercial development, new product development, technology and strategy. He served on boards of directors for several organizations, including the Licensing Executives Society (LES), where he served as Vice President of LES USA.
