Brookhaven National Laboratory is a global leader in accelerator, detector, superconductor and related technologies. The Advanced Technology Research Office (ATRO) consolidates core staff, research programs, and infrastructure in accelerator, detector, and related technologies to partner with industry and serve as an incubator for cross-cutting initiatives to advance U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) science, energy, and security missions.

ATRO has a broad sponsor base including funding from all six DOE SC Science Programs, the National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA), NASA, and other strategic partnership programs. The three largest sponsors HEP, NP, and NNSA R&D support 90% of the work.

The Instrumentation Department creates customized solutions to instrumentation challenges—from detectors probing for fundamental particles created in the formation of the universe to quantum networks for the internet of the future. Our mission is to develop advanced technology in support of science and national security. We maintain in-house expertise in sensors, electronics, and complex systems and state-of-the-art fabrication, testing, and characterization facilities.

Brookhaven's Magnet Division is creating the future of superconductor and magnet technology. Our mission is to advance the science and technology of superconducting magnets; to apply these technologies to support accelerators, fundamental science discoveries, energy and other industrial applications requiring high magnetic fields; and ensure a strong national talent pool for superconducting magnet development in the United States.

Accelerator Sci & Tech Initiative

The Accelerator Science & Technology (AST) Department develops transformative technology advances that will form the basis of next-generation particle sources and accelerators, to support user-driven research into the science and technology of accelerator and laser physics, and to help enable the deployment of new technologies for basic science, industry, medicine, and security applications. AST is comprised of the Accelerator Facilities Division (AFD) and Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD).

Accelerator Facilities Division

The Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) makes particle accelerator technology available for science and industry and supports the development of accelerators that meet national needs. The ATF is a user facility where research teams can develop transformational capabilities to support the fields of energy and environment, medicine, industry, national security, and discovery science. Access is free to academic and government users.

Office of Project Management & Execution

The Office of Project Management and Execution (OPME) leverages the knowledge and experience of its team to promote adoption of best practices in project management and engineering. OPME provides oversight and support to large- and medium-size projects managed within ATRO and smaller projects led by subordinate organizations. OPME collaborates with engineering leaders in ATRO organizations to ensure engineering, design, and configuration management best practices are employed. The office works closely with other Brookhaven Lab organizations to share best practices and offer project support.
