"An Updated Measurement of Muon g-2 to 0.2 ppm"

Presented by Joshua LaBounty, University of Washington

Thursday, September 14, 2023, 3:00 pm — Small Seminar Room, Bldg. 510

Abstract: The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab searches for signs of physics beyond the standard model by precisely measuring the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We do this by analyzing the spin precession of a stored muon beam in a 1.45T magnetic storage ring. In 2021, results from Run-1 of the experiment confirmed the value measured by the E821 Experiment at Brookhaven National Lab. Now, results from Runs 2-3 have strengthened the results and increased the precision on the global average result by a factor of two to 0.2 ppm. This was achieved through a combination of increased statistical precision and better modelling and control of systematic effects (the uncertainty on which is now below our proposal goal). This talk presents an overview of the analysis, a discussion of the comparison with the standard model prediction and the current tensions therein, and the prospects for future improvements in the analysis of the remaining data.
