Physics Colloquium

"Evolution and Merging of Compact Objects; Gravitational Waves for LIGO"

Presented by Gerry Brown, Stony Brook University

Tuesday, April 5, 2005, 3:30 pm — Large Seminar Room, Bldg. 510

Gerry Brown began this work with Hans Bethe (when Hans was 90) at the request of Kip Thorne, in order to estimate the contribution of black-hole, neutron-star binaries to the LIGO detections. Bethe and Brown estimated that there would be 20 times more black-hole, neutron-star mergings than binary neutron stars. Bethe, together with Brown, kept updating their work with recent observations until Bethe's death March 6.
