Particle Physics Seminar

"Low-Energy Nuclear Recoils for Fun and Profit"

Presented by Juan Collar, University of Chicago

Thursday, March 2, 2006, 1:30 pm — Large Seminar Room, Bldg. 535

Heavy-liquid bubble chambers can be used to look for the keV recoils induced by Weakly Interacting Massive Particle interactions, and more on the mundane side, as background-insensitive high-efficiency fast neutron detectors, with applications to interrogation methods. Similarly, the detection of the sub-keV nuclear recoils expected from
low-energy neutrino scattering off nuclei would enable new studies of fundamental neutrino properties and possibly lead to reactor monitoring applications. Two ongoing experimental efforts along these directions (COUPP, COGENT) will be discussed.
