"Generalized Polarizabilities of the Photon at low Q^2 using Virtual Compton Scattering"

Presented by Paul S. Bourgeois, Amherst College

Tuesday, November 14, 2006, 11:00 am — Small Seminar Room, Bldg. 510

The Generalized Polarizabilities (GP's) of the proton are new observables that have been made accessible through the virtual Compton scattering(VCS) reaction. Precise measurements of the GP's will set constraints on models of the proton and will enhance our understanding of nucleon structure. My talk will focus on the use of VCS to measure the GP's and I will present newly published results of the electric and magnetic GP's at low four-moment transfer squared (Q^2). I will also present the first determination of the electric and magnetic mean square polarizable radii of the proton.
