Physics Colloquium

"History of the Development of the Bubble Chamber"

Presented by David Rahm, BNL - Physics Department

Tuesday, April 3, 2007, 3:30 pm — Large Seminar Room, Bldg. 510

From the early days of the cloud chamber visual methods of viewing the tracks of particles have played a large role in our understanding of nature. I will recount a bit of the early history of the field and then proceed to the development of the Bubble Chamber. The Bubble Chamber was invented in 1952 at the University of Michigan by Don Glaser, whose student I was. I will discuss how and why Bubble Chamber became an important tool in high energy physics and tell a few anecdotes along the way.
