Cosmology Seminar

"Cosmology for Beginners, Part 1. Prelude: GR for the Common Man"

Presented by Paul Stankus, Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Monday, June 11, 2007, 11:00 am — Small Seminar Room, Bldg. 510

General Relativity provides the basic framework for all modern discussions of cosmology. While the full theory can
seem intimidating, the essentials of GR which provide a working understanding of cosmology are quite accessible with no advanced mathematics. In this Prelude to the Introductory Cosmology series we center on subjective (proper) time as the fundamental physical observable, explore the utility of the metric tensor and derive elementary laws of motion in the weak field limit.
