Cosmology Seminar

"Cosmology for Beginners, Part 2. Expanding Universes"

Presented by Paul Stankus, Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Tuesday, June 12, 2007, 11:00 am — Large Seminar Room, Bldg. 510

In this second lecture we begin our discussion of cosmology proper with the basics of the Hubble expansion, the principles of uniformity and isotropy, and our "workhorse,"
the Robertson-Walker metric. Basic solutions are exhibited,
and the cosmological red-shift is derived easily. (Time permitting, there will also be an Addendum entitled
"Why Brooklyn Is Not Expanding.")
