C-AD Accelerator Physics Seminar

"Low Energy Heavy Ion Collider-NICA/MPD Project"

Presented by Anatoly Sidorin, JINR, Dubna, Russia

Thursday, December 13, 2007, 4:00 pm — Large Conference Room, Bldg. 911B

General goal of the project is to start in the coming 57 years experimental study of hot and dense strongly interacting QCD matter and search for possible manifestation of signs of the mixed phase and critical endpoint in heavy ion collisions. The Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) and the Multi Purpose Detector (MPD) are proposed for these purposes. NICA is the new accelerator complex being constructed on the JINR site. It builds on the experience and technological developed at the existing Nuclotron facility and incorporates new technological concepts. Two new superconducting storage rings will be constructed to provide collider experiment with heavy ions like Au, Pb or U at energy from 1 x 1 GeV/u up to 3.5 x 3.5 GeV/u with average luminosity of the order of 1027 cm-2s-1 and collisions of light ions in the total energy range available with the synchrotron Nuclotron.
