Physics Colloquium

"Astroparticle Physics of the Pierre Auger Cosmic Ray Observatory"

Presented by Paul Sommers, Penn State

Tuesday, January 29, 2008, 3:30 pm — Large Seminar Room, Bldg. 510

Arrival directions of cosmic rays above the GZK energy threshold are correlated with celestial positions of nearby Active Galactic Nuclei. Are AGNs the sources of the cosmic rays, or are their positions only tracing those of the true sources? In either case, the cosmic ray arrival directions are not isotropic, and the sources are extragalactic. The primary particles are almost surely protons, and pion photoproduction on the CMB (the GZK effect) has been verified without any assumption about the injection spectrum. Hadronic interactions will be studied at center-of-mass energies above 300 TeV.
