C-AD Accelerator Physics Seminar

"The LSST: A Window on the Stars"

Presented by Michael Sivertz, Collider-Accelerator Department/BNL

Friday, June 6, 2008, 4:00 pm — Large Conference Room, Bldg. 911B

Brookhaven is participating in the development of a new telescope called the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, to be built in Chile. It is a new type of instrument, designed to scan the entire sky every three days. It will enable studies of dark matter and dark energy through a deep tomography of space. It will catalogue all transient phenomena, from supernovae to asteroids. I will describe the broad range of science that this telescope will make possible. I will give a brief description of the telescope itself, and the new 8.4 meter primary (and tertiary) mirror just cast, as well as the 3 Gigapixel camera readout currently being tested at BNL. And I will detail the status of the project funding and timeline.
